Basic hardware requirements

The hardware that you need to install SCO OpenServer varies, depending on the installation options that you choose, the applications that you use, and your intended use for the system. This section lists the basic hardware requirements for three scenarios of a Fresh installation:

• the minimum requirements for running SCO OpenServer

• the recommended hardware for good performance on an average system

• the maximum number of system resources supported by SCO OpenServer

Installing on 32MB systems

You can install SCO OpenServer on a system with only 32MB of RAM, subject to these caveats:

• Start the installation from the floppy Boot Disk, not from the bootable CD-ROM. The bootable CD-ROM consumes enough memory that it may cause the installation to fail.

• If the floppy Boot Disk provided in the SCO OpenServer media kit consumes too much memory, you need to create your own installation floppy using the small kernel image called smallmem.img. See ``SCO OpenServer installation media'' for specific instructions.

• If installing on a system that requires boot-time loadable drivers (BTLDs):

  1. Create the small kernel and BTLD floppy disks.

  2. Start the installation using the small kernel floppy Boot Disk.

  3. Enter the appropriate BTLD bootstring at the boot prompt.
