Starting and exiting the Desktop

If you logged in previously, you may see a dialog box with two options:

To start the Desktop with the setup you had prior to your last logout, select the option to resume your last session.

To start the Desktop with the setup you saw when you first logged in (known as the default state), select the option to start a new session.

An hourglass appears, indicating that you're waiting for the session manager, scosession, to start the Desktop. In addition to starting the Desktop,

After you complete your Desktop session, follow the procedure described below to log out:

  1. Select Exit from the Desktop File menu.

  2. If you changed the layout of the Desktop window, you see a message asking if you want to save the new Desktop layout.

  3. If you have anything in the Trash desktop, you see a message asking if you want to empty it before exiting.

  4. After you answer those questions, you see a message asking you to confirm that you want to log out. Choose OK to exit completely from the Desktop. Choose Cancel to continue with working.
