Using Desktop menus

The main Desktop menu bar provides the following menus:

The File menu allows you to perform tasks related to icons, files, or desktops. Among the menu items are:

Open: opens or activates selected icons.
Find: locates specified files.
Save: saves the current organization of the Desktop or desktop window.
Tree: displays the contents of a directory and its subdirectories in a hierarchical diagram (known as a "tree view"). See ``Using Treeview''.

The Edit menu allows you to manipulate icons. Among the menu items are:

Get Out: moves selected icons onto the Desktop or desktop window.
Put Back: returns selected icons to their original locations.
Select All: selects all the icons on the Desktop or desktop window.

The View menu allows you to change how icons appear on desktops and to change the layout of icons. Among the menu items are:

Icons: shows the files and directories as icons.
Names: shows the files and directories as mini-icons.
Clean up: lines up the icons in an invisible grid pattern, moving each icon to the nearest grid line.
Reorganize: organizes the icons on a desktop, starting at the top left corner.

The Options menu allows you to customize your desktops. For more information on customization, see the Graphical Environment Guide . Among the menu items are:

Preferences Editor: allows you to customize desktop color, font, background, and patterns.
Desktop Preferences: customizes dialog boxes, the mouse behavior, icons, popup menus, tools, and devices.

The Tools menu allows you to access various tools. Among the menu items are:

Toolsheds: opens the Toolsheds window, which provides access to a variety of programs, utilities, and applications. These tools are grouped by category. For example, Devices and Desktop Administration are two of the categories. For more information, see ``Starting programs from the Desktop''.
Personal Icons: opens the .xdt_dir/bitmaps directory, which contains any icon files you have created or edited.
